So... I finally took my 82 pick-up in for testing (it was due in November 06 but at the time it was inoperable). I got to the test station this morning and the crew there was confused. They sent me to the office. Turns out, they said that IL passed a new law last week making any pre 1995 vehicle emmissions exempt so it ends up I no longer need it to be tested. :smt023 :smt023

Has anyone else heard this?

We are thrilled that the smog nazis are leaving the older cars alone. The good news is now a stroker motor is a must in any 95 or older car.

Yes. That law has passed as of this month.
IT IS TRUE....

It sounds like if they can't test it using the OBDII connector they won't want to waste their time.

Maybe this will cut down the wait time at the testing centers. :smt023

Pretty soon all you'll have to do is plug your car into your computer and email in your emissions reading.

That would be nice, but then they would charge you a "convenience fee" like they do with plate renewals

I never understood that, how come if they have to have less workers and its automated why do they need to charge? You'd think it would be cheaper.

You would think it would be cheaper but when has the government done anything that makes sense.I paid the fee one time and never recieved my sticker in the mail. The Secratary of state never sent it out.So I had to get into the car and drive down to the DMV anyway. It was like pulling teeth to get my sticker and they wouldnt refund my CONVIENCE FEE.:censor: I Know it wasnt much but that wasnt the point. What was the topic again?Thats right emmisions.

Me too! I ended up paying for the replacement because I could not get Ford, the lendor or the State to take the blame. Come to think of it, I should have checked with the couple that moved into my old house to see if the original title ever showed up there...](*,)

I also never recieved a mailing one year for registration renewal on one of my cars and got a ticket for expired tags. It's all a :censor:ing racket.

My wife has an eye to spot expired tags. (Maybe she should be a cop...) She is puzzled on how people can go for months on expired tags. She actually considered not paying the renewal fee. But I chimed in and said that the very next month after they expired she would probably get a ticket.

The convenience charge is just like freaking TicketMaster. Why do I have to pay to print my own damn tickets?

What will happen to all these emission stations when they go to electric cars? LOL

Then they'll have to start using a sniffer to detect decomposition b'cause you'll never get me in one of them electric boxes while I'm alive...

You get 3 months from the first notice and there is an option to tell the state that the car is in storage/out of state or otherwise not driveable but it is best to reply with those comments at the first notice. Then you can provide an expected date that the car can be tested.

If you do lapse and it goes over, it takes them months to catch up and actually process a suspension of the registration. When I informed the SOS that my truck was not going to be available by the due date in November 2006, they replied that the suspension of the registration would be effective in March 2007 if it is not tested and passed by March.

Mot, thanks for the info, I did see that part about the vehicle being out of state, but I didn't do it soon enough. I was afriad of getting the vehicle's registration suspended. I guess for me it was easier to just go get it done. At least I don't have to do this for another 4 years? (I have know idea what the laws are).

I just mod them and sell them before the 4-years...that way, I don't have to worry about it!

Careful, if your driver's license number is shown on that vehicle's registration card, then your license will be suspended as well. Not a fun thing to go through if you had no idea that it happens.

Can they do that if you have multiple vehicles registered in your name? That's :bsflag: .

Zodiak, On Monday I'll post the letter I received from IL regarding my 82 and the exemption the testing station wrote up for me when I went in. It was due to be tested in November '06. I was informed that if it did not pass by December, my registration would be suspended in March '07. When I finally got it running and took it in to be tested, the testing station wouldn't test it due to the recently passed law as discussed earlier in this thread. depending on when you got your 79 tested, it sounds like someone needs a :bat:

They just suspended my license plates for the T/A. I have been pulled over since then so I know my license is still good. I had the December date as well. It only took them two weeks to send me the suspension notice. I wonder what would happen if I brought my car to a testing facility. I wonder if that would clear me.

Mike hit that one on the nose. There is an artical on the front page of Sunday's Trib-"State gives old beaters a free ride"-that talks about getting cars in the system to pass one last time especially if they failed in a previous test before granting the exemption for the future. I guess I got lucky in that my 82 was only brought into IL in 2005 and had never been tested before.

Seems the whole change to the emissions regulations is as highly politically motivated as ever. Story goes on to say that the change in the law is related to a new management company taking over in a no bid contract awarded to a company that donated $40,000 to Blago's campaign fund...

Oh, the story also says that in some cases, it has been determined through actual sampling that emissions testing programs have not done anything to actuially clean the air. Duh! The concentration on car polution is really just a smoke screen because polititions are afraid to go after the big factories and power plants that produce more polution than cars ever could...

There's talk in Wisconsin of dropping the whole program. They spend millions on testing and only catch a few cars a year.
